2013 French Open finals: Nadal Vs Ferrer

June 8, 2013

Nadal vs Ferrer

The 2013 French Open finals is a clash between two Spaniards, Rafael Nadal, who is aiming for his eighth French Open title, while the other, David Ferrer is still looking for his first Grand Slam title. Many consider Rafael Nadal as favourites for the title as well, understandably with the 58-1 win loss record against his name at Roland Garros. But one should not just ignore the consistency displayed by Ferrer in the 2013 French Open, where he has not lost a single set –an amazing feat, which even Nadal has failed to replicate in this edition.

Rafael Nadal did not kick start his campaign in great fashion, as he faced some obstacles en route- lost one set each in his first and second round encounter. It was a good wake up call for the favourite, as he picked his game at the right moment and came up with some good matches to reach the finals. His semi-finals victory deserves a special mention here as he was almost done and dusted in the epic encounter against Djokovic, which was a pure result of his determination.

To be fair, Ferrer has not faced a tough opponent in the competition. This might be a negative thing for Ferrer, as he is facing the best player of clay, Nadal in the finals of a Grand Slam, French Open, which he loves to clinch every year. Irrespective of the opponents he has faced, it is his game, which has stood right up there amongst some of his best performances. It is no child’s play when one beats all his opponents in straight sets.

Both the players love to indulge themselves in long rallies making their opponents make an unforced error and in current form, Nadal seems to be in better shape to draw the unforced error. It might be imperative for Ferrer to play an aggressive brand of tennis so as to go on the offensive and get the better out of himself. In their last meeting at Rome, Ferrer played some good Tennis with aggression, but failed to win, thought he came close. So, will Ferrer play aggressively this time? Only time will tell.

History also claims Nadal to be the favourite for the 2013 French Open title, as these two players have clashed with one another 23 times, where Nadal has turned victorious 19 times. To make matters worse, Nadal has only lost to Ferrer in the red clay surface was on 2004 – nine years back, when Nadal was just getting a hold of tennis at the highest level. Since then, he has come a long way.

Tennis fans may not witness a typical clash – Federer vs Nadal or Djokovic vs Nadal in a Grand Slam final. Nadal Vs Ferrer fixture may fail to bring that excitement, but the match calls for two players who never give up and break hard sweat to win that single point. The match is going to be a classic example of temperament. Hence, it is time to tighten your seat belt and enjoy the long and enduring ride, which should witness the best rallies of 2013 French Open.
