Bitter Truth: Liverpool top four finish only a dream

February 17, 2013

It is nice to be positive, but you need to back that positivity with results. Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers still thinks that the team is capable of finishing in the top four of the English Premier League standings. That would be asking too much from a team, which has not beaten any team that is placed higher than them this season. Realistically speaking, the team should be happy if they finish in the top 6 this season and make necessary changes for next season during the summer.

Their recent defeat against West Brom in the EPL and their loss against Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Europa League have shown that their team still needs to find their foot under Brendan Rodgers. The team is relatively thin on the squad, as per quality if compared with other top teams across the EPL. It is okay for the team owners to have a policy of signing young players in the squad, but experience counts a lot in football, especially in a league, where the competition is tough every week. There is no easy match in the English Premier League – teams cannot be taken for granted.

Liverpool are 12 points adrift of the elusive fourth spot in the EPL standings, where Liverpool’s points read 36 with 26 games played and Tottenham with the same number of matches have 48 points lying fourth. The fight for the fourth spot is going to be among Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool fans have to wait for yet another season to see if their team can finish in the top four standings.

With 12 matches to go, Liverpool at best can pick up not more than 20 points in current form, unless Brendan Rodgers has some magic wand, which would help Liverpool look a different unit all together. If they take 20 points, they are going to have 56 points, which is not going to be enough for them to climb unto the fourth spot. For the rest of the teams in the League are also going to take more or less similar points. Liverpool should be happy to finish in the top six and here also, they are six points away from The sixth position, which is currently held by their rivals, Everton.

They might have played well against top teams such as Manchester United, City, but their consistency has failed their fans as well, who are considered to be the most loyal of supporters. They have failed against teams from lower half of the table. Liverpool has not been able to come up with performances week in and out like other top teams of the EPL. So, how can one just believe in whatever the manager believes in, for he is also human like us. These words should be taken nothing more than encouraging words from a manager, who is hell bent on bringing success to the club.
