February 15, 2013

Out of the 26 Indian Olympic medals till date, four of the have been won in wrestling. And of recent, India has been a serious contender in wrestling, as their recent 2012 London Olympics performance would suggest, where Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt won a silver and Bronze respectively. Sushil also won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. So, with wrestling removed from the list of core group of Olympic sports, the Indian dream of winning a medal in the 2020 Olympics has received a serious jolt.

With the sport increasing its popularity after the 2012 London Olympics, there are number of youngsters who have taken this game very seriously and have already started their preparations for the 2020 Games. Now when these youngsters come to hear about such kind of news, they are bound to get distracted and gradually lose their interest. Now with what aim will these youngsters train?

So, if wrestling fails to grab a place in the core group of 2020 Olympic sports, the popularity of the sport is going to decline in India as well. We may not see any youngsters keen to take up the sport of wrestling. Even with chances of Asian Games and Commonwealth in the scenario for wrestlers, but they would rue the fact of not accomplishing their dream – to be called an Indian Olympian. Olympic champions are given higher respect than champions from Asian Games or the Commonwealth. Try to recall any last Asian Gold medalist, if you can. Can you? But when you ask anyone about the names of 2012 London Olympics medalist, many would be able to answer this question.Wrestlers consider Olympics to be the biggest of all competition, as it is one of the most watched event all around the world. If one succeeds in the Olympics, fame and name runs to you at the speed of knots along with money.

But, India should not lose hope as there are strong chances that wrestling would come back to the main fold for the 2020 Olympics. It is on September that the final decision would be taken. From amongst eight sports namely, baseball/ softball, karate, rock climbing, roller sports, squash, wakeboarding, wushu and wrestling, only one would be chosen. With the number of international wrestling federations’ putting pressure on the IOC to bring back wrestling, the chances are relatively high. Also, the three contenders to host the 2020 Olympic Games, Spain, Turkey and Japan have a good record in wrestling. It all helps in the cause of bringing back wrestling to fold of 2020 Olympic Games.
