David De Gea ‘best’ saves against Real Madrid saved Manchester United

De Gea

David De Gea has been one of the most criticised players in Manchester United colours in recent times. But the perception of the player changed when he showcased his skills in the Champions League match against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. He was the standout player for United with some great saves to help United draw their match in the round of 16 fixture.

With the number of quality players that were available with Jose Mourinho, David De Gea had to be at his best and in fact, Gea had one of his best night ever since he joined United. The lad seemed to be ready for the game, when he pulled off a great save in the first few minutes of the game, which would even please the former Manchester goalie, Peter Schmeichel.

David de Gea was unsighted when Coentrao from16 yards out curled the ball with his right foot, which had written goal all over it, only to be fingertipped inside the post by Gea. Just getting a touch was exceptional and the ball hitting the post was the icing on the cake for the goalie. This save must have given the goalie an extra lift and he finally showed his class by coming up with a huge game for the red devils.

It seemed that De Gea could give his life to make sure that Coentrao would not score. He came up with another brilliant save around the hour mark, where he had to use his feet to deflect the ball away, which was heading towards the goal again struck by Coentrao. With just 10 minutes remaining in the game, neither teams wanted to concede a goal. Had it not been for another of Gea’s great saves of the night in the last 10 minutes, Madrid would have turned out victorious. He once again showed that he belonged to the league of big players by saving Sami Khedira attempt on goal. He did not crumble under pressure, which many United fans had seen him under the bar.

Real had 28 attempts on goal and only found the back of the net once, all due David De Gea’s brilliant display at the Santiago Bernabeu. If David De Gea comes up with a similar performance in the second leg as well, he will not only help Manchester United progress further in the competition, but also silence his critics.
