Liverpool’s legend, Jamie Carragher to quit at the end of season

February 7, 2013

Carragher

Jamie Carragher has decided to hang his boots from competitive football and this ongoing EPL season is going to be his last. He has played as many as 723 matches for the reds – 496 in the EPL alone. So, it is almost sure that the player is going to play his 500th league game for Liverpool, which in itself talks about the player and his loyalty to the club.

Ever since the player made his debut for Liverpool, fans instantly fell in love with the player, as he had a strong desire to give it his all in Liverpool jersey. Not many players can fall in the league of Jamie Carragher is concerned, only Steven Gerrard can be compared along side this player in Liverpool jerseys as far as their commitment is concerned – from the current generation of players. Hence, these two players are two of the most liked and respected players from Liverpool.

Carragher has always been a huge success as a defender for Liverpool, who did not mind playing for Liverpool in any position in the back four. But, it was in fact Rafa Benitez who made him feature as a central defender and how well the player respond to this change did. Ever since, he has been one of the best central defenders who made life tough for strikers. He was never afraid to go for the tackles and more often or not – he would turn out to be the winner.

Jamie Carragher won a number of titles in his Liverpool career, but it must be the 2004-05 Champions League medal that he won that surpasses all other achievements. Along with this he also won the FA Cup, League Cup, Community shield etc. Such was the quality of the player that he also won Liverpool’s best player award twice in 2005 and 2007. But, as Gerrard, Carragher also must rue the fact of not having won the Premier League title in spite of having come so close to win the title in many instances.

Carragher is 35 years now, but still he energizes himself when he puts on the Liverpool jersey, as his recent performances against Manchester City and Arsenal would suggest so. He might have lost his speed, but he makes that up with the intelligence and experience that he has gained after playing under various Liverpool managers since the 1996/97 season in the EPL.

The player has given the fans so much to cheer and write home about, so it is going to be an emotional time when Carragher would play his last for Liverpool this season. Hence, it could be a fitting end to his career if Liverpool gives him the captaincy arm band irrespective of the importance of the last match of the season. One is for sure that some tears are going to roll down many cheeks of those who kept Carragher close to his chest. Even when he walks, the legend will forever live in the heart of Liverpool players.

He has reached the end of his playing career. I recommend that he join the coaching stuff so as to enable gain some experience. Bravo!!
