Liverpool thrash Fulham: Gerrard shows his class

December 22, 2012

Gerrard Liverpool goal

Liverpool put up a clinical performance to defeat the travelling Fulham team at Anfield with the score reading 4-0. Brendan Rodgers rested Allen and Sterling, who has been vital for Liverpool this season, from the starting eleven, only to later come in as substitutes. But, in their absence it was other players such as Downing, Lucas, Enrique and Steven Gerrard who stole the limelight, with Gerrard being the star performer.

Many pundits claim Steven Gerrard is past his prime, but those who witnessed this match against Fulham would completely disagree with it. There were shades of Gerrard the old, which meant there were long balls drilled to wingers and men in front of him,, perfectly timed runs resulting in goals, rushing back to help his defense etc, which was characteristic of the player some seasons ago.  It was one of his best passing games in this EPL campaign. Liverpool fans would love to see the best of the player, who has brought some of the best memories to their fans.

In previous EPL matches, Gerrard did not have a good share of the football with Allen’s absence in the centre of the park who normally shared the central midfield role with Gerrard, but in his absence, he showed what he could do with that football – bringing the best of all the players by making them run and make space. How well did the rest of the players also comply with the demands of the captain. Not playing Allen also gives Brendan Rodgers another attacking player, which augers well for Liverpool.

So, does this mean that Allen and Gerrard should not share the same role in the centre of park for Liverpool? If this is the case, so be it. If Liverpool can play such beautiful game with Gerrard distributing the ball from the centre of the park, then, why should Brendan Rodgers think of changing this formation as well? As is the case, if Gerrard performs, Liverpool comes alive to his magic.

After a long time, one got to see a Liverpool side who not only dominated the match in terms of possession, but also in the goal conversion chart, which has been Liverpool’s major problem. So, will leave one of his favourite players, Allen out and adopt the same formation in Liverpool’s next EPL fixture and give Gerrard the license to move forward and have more share of the ball, which is only going to help the team.

The final call rests with Brendan Rodgers himself.
