January Transfer Window 2012/2013: Liverpool need a striker

October 18, 2012

Demba Ba , Darren Bent , to Liverpool ?

Liverpool has played seven matches in the EPL only to score nine goals in the competition. They are languishing on the 14th place in the 2012/2013 season EPL standings. One of the most important reasons for their unimpressive performance has been their showing in the final third, which has simply been below par, in spite of dominating the game for a longer duration in the centre of the park. There is a serious need for Liverpool to engage themselves in good business during the January transfer window – in search for a box to box striker, who can score at least 20 goals per season.

Brendan Rodgers does not have plenty of options in his squad as well. Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini are the only genuine strikers with experience in their present squad. The latter has not even opened his goal account for Liverpool. To make matters worse Fabio Borini has been sidelined for three months. There are some youngsters in the squad like Samed Yesil, which is another option for Liverpool, but he has not been given a chance in the EPL by Brendan Rodgers. His time will come and when it does come, he needs to impress Rodgers like the way Suso and Sterling did, hence they have found a way into the Liverpool eleven.

Though Luis Suarez is a great striker, but he has not been a consistent scorer for the reds. He does not have a good goal conversion record, for which he has been highly criticised . Apart from his hat-trick against Norwich, he has not been able to find the back of the net on regular count. There is no doubt about the quality of the player, whose style of play seems to be appropriate for the role of a second striker or an attacking midfielder. He can provide regular assist to the strikers.

What are the options that are available in the January transfer market for Liverpool? The Liverpool management are not going to break the bank to get a established striker such as Falcao, Llorente etc who will sign for huge money. These players fall in the bracket of Manchester City and Chelsea, who have owners to splurge money.

Liverpool need to go in for a striker who fits into the present Liverpool scheme of things under Brendan Rodgers. Mid season, there are not many players who are out in the market to switch teams, but some players, which has grabbed Liverpool’s attention are Demba Ba, Daniel Sturridge, Darren Bent among a host of many other rumours. Any of these players could prove to be a big buy for Liverpool, especially Ba, who with his goal scoring ability could set a fire in Anfield.

All these players fit into Liverpool with their quick feet and fast legs. Liverpool, who prefer to play the passing game could suit these players, who have a knack of scoring goals. They were talked about in the summer transfer window for Liverpool, but to no success. Liverpool are in dire straits so, they need to get a striker who would solve their goal scoring problems.

On the other hand, Brendan Rodgers has always wanted to get a player who does not burn a big hole in their pocket. But, it has been heard that Rodgers who was disappointed with the summer transfer budget is expected to get a bigger purse and he would want to maximise it. It completely depends on Rodgers, if he wants to spend the entire amount on a solo striker or use it for 2-3 players.

But, it is not going to be surprising, if he goes in for a surprise selection from other leagues in the form of a youngster, but a proven one for a small amount after getting a quality striker. Liverpool’s target of getting a quality striker should not change even if they are aiming for a number of other players as well. They have to take one step at a time. This team would look great with an out-and-out striker, as they have all the positions covered to challenge for the title, if not this year, but next year.

Demba Ba will be a perfect target to get us where we opt to go in the transfer window come January. He’s strong, prolific, aggressive in front of goal, etc. Getting him will be a plus for LFC. I have been one of the strong critics of Rodger’s in ability to buy doing the transfer windows, but I understood everything when John Henry wrote the Liverpool fans apologizing. When it comes to domination, Liverpool always have the fair shared, but scoring goals is our problem. Demba Ba will be a perfect target if he’s willing to leave New Castle in January.
