Nehru Cup 2012 : India beats Syria, 2-1 in the inaugural match

August 22, 2012

Sunil Chettri, Nehru Cup 2012

The Indian team led by Sunil Chhetri proved to be handful for the Syrian team in the Nehru Cup 2012, which started today at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Syria lost to the home team and the defending champions, India 2-1 in the first match of the tournament. Sunil Chhetri and Anthony Pereira were the two goal scorers for India.

It was India who took the lead before the two teams walked into their dugout at the end of first half. The Indians showed why they were favourites by coming up with an impressive game to register an important victory in the Nehru Cup. India strengthened their position in the game after Pereira’s strike on the 84th minute. It was a good finish with his left foot.

The Indian team looked a better side in the wet pitch at the stadium after a heavy down pour. The Indian team also seems to have benefitted from the camp that had taken place just before the tournament got underway. The new coach, Koevermans also seemed to be satisfied, when the final whistle blew for the match to get over, just few minutes after the Syrian team registered their first goal of the competition.

With this victory, the Indian team would be a confident outfit when they play their next opponent, Maldives on 25th of August. If they put up a similar performance, they are going to win the match. But, in football, anything can happen, so, the Indian team cannot afford to take the Maldives team lightly.
