Maria Sharapova knocked out of Wimbledon by Sabine Lisicki

July 3, 2012

Maria Sharapova was looking in good touch before she met Sabine Lisicki, the strong hitting German girl in the fourth round of the ongoing Wimbledon Championship. The German girl came up with an amazing performance to oust the World number one player in the WTA circuit, Maria Sharapova. It was a major setback as she was looking ahead for this Grand Slam title, after her French Open title last month. She lost the match, 6-4 and 6-3.

Sabine Lisicki, who is ranked number 15 was the second favourite during the match, as she was pitted against a top player. But, as always, it is the player who plays better on the day that walks away with the game. The same was witnessed where the German girl overpowered Sharapova to progress into the quarter finals of the competition.

It was disappointing to see such a player being knocked out of the tournament. She has always been a player, who draws big crowd, as she is liked by all and sundry. Apart from this, she would also drop her world number 1 ranking in a week or so time after her defeat. With her exit, the championship has been slit wide open. It could be anyone’s game now, as she was tipped to be the favourite to lift the title after many top players had been ousted from the tournament. Now, S. Williams, V. Azarenka, A. Radwanska, P. Kvitova have a great chance to turn out triumphant for the Wimbledon title.
