Euro 2012 : England and France not guaranteed a quarter final berth

June 19, 2012

The six spots for the quarter finals of the European Championship has been decided. Now 2 more teams are to progress by tonight, as England play Ukraine and Sweden would take on France in Group D. Out of these teams, apart from Sweden all three teams have a chance to progress into the knockout stage. Currently, France stands at the top of the table with four points, followed by England, Ukraine and Sweden with 4, 3 and 0 points respectively.

The English team has looked a good side in the competition so far. But, they cannot afford to take the co host, Ukraine for granted, as they have defeated Sweden in the competition too. They would be fully backed by their vocal supporters. England fans would not be far behind, when it comes to supporting their team. England has not lost any of the matches so far. They would like to keep their record in tact. A draw here would be sufficient for them to reach the knock out stage. But, If Ukraine win the match, they would progress ahead in the competition. So anything is possible.

Another fixture in the same group between France and Sweden would be a mouth watering one. Sweden might have no chance to reach the knock out rounds, but they would be eager to restore some pride by putting up a spirited display of football on the pitch. France at least need a draw in order to reach the next round of the competition. But, it they lose their game and England also lose their match, then the goal difference would come into play between England and France, as they would be left with same points. Hence, only one out of the two would go through.

Still, there is so much to play for teams in Group D. This is the best part about the European Championships, where there is no easy competition. Only the toughest teams will survive in the championship and will eventually be crowned as champions.

    • I second you on this. It can be anyone’s game. No surprise , if an underdog wins the championship.
