Fernando Torres and David Silva show their class to help Spain defeat Ireland

June 15, 2012

Fernando Torres, Euro 2012

Fernando Torres, who had come under the scrutiny for his poor form showed his class against Rep. of Ireland by scoring 2 goals for Spain. The Spanish team won the game easily with the scoreline reading 4-0. Cesc Fabregas and David Silva were the other players on the score sheet. The two players who stood out for their performances yesterday night were Fernando Torres and David Silva.

Fernando Torres had been left out of the first match as Fabregas was spear heading the attack in their first game against Italy. So, Torres had something to prove to his coach,Del Bosque. How well did he justify his selection for the second match in the starting 11 by scoring a goal in the fourth minute. It was a strike, which would make any striker happy. He scored his second during the second half.

Apart from Torres, David Silva also looked in prime form. His skills on the ball were amazing troubling Irish defenders. He was making those threading passes to the men upfront and his dazzling runs were just adding flair to Spain’s game. Hence, he also managed to put his name on the score sheet to prove that he is not only a smooth passer, but a great finisher too. He was very composed when he scored his goal, just placing the ball on the corner of the net.

Spain proved all their doubters after their first match wrong, by scoring an emphatic win to inch closer to the quarterfinals of Euro 2012. They played the tiki-tika style of football, which they are best at. Their passing movement in the football pitch was immaculate. Their ball possession during the game made it impossible for the Irish team to put the ball on their feet.

Spain has clearly showed that they are indeed the favourites for Euro 2012. Other teams in the competition would fear Spain, if they play such quality football , as they did against Ireland. It could be a tough challenge for other teams in the competition to defeat this Spanish side. Germany might have something else to say about it, as they are also one of the favourites for the prestigious title.
