Andiry Shevchenko’s 2 goals help Ukraine defeat Sweden

June 12, 2012

Andiry Shevchenko may not have impressed in his EPL stint as a Chelsea player , when he was considered to be at his prime. But he wrote a different story yesterday night at the age of 35, when many people had counted him out. He proved his critics wrong after scoring 2 crucial goals helping the Ukrainian side defeat Sweden in their first match of the Euro 2012 championship.

The former Chelsea player did not require his feet to score goals, as his head was enough to floor the Swedish side, who were expected to win the game. It was a shock for Sweden, as their progression into the next round of the competition may be hindered due to yesterday’s result.

It was a spirited display by the co-hosts, Ukraine after trailing 1-0 during the game. The way Ukraine fought back into the game surprised many a people. It talked volumes about the team, who are considered to be one of the dark horses of Euro 2012. If they are going to show this fighting spirit, they might upset some more teams in the competition.

With this result, the group has come alive and Ukraine has increased their chances of progressing into the next stage of the competition. Other teams in the group, England and France would be wary of the threat that the Ukrainian side possess with full support from their fans.

The million dollar question that everyone has been asking in the streets of Ukraine is, will Ukraine defeat England or France? If they manage to do so, it will be a great victory, for they will inch closer to the knock out competition.
