Spain’s squad for Euro 2012 announced, Torres lucky, Soldado unlucky

May 27, 2012

Fernando Torres, Euro 2012

Fernando Torres has been included in the Euro 2012 squad, after many experts claimed that he might not take Spain’s flight to Ukraine and Poland. Had David Villa been fit, Torres might have been excluded. The squad, which was announced today and as usual, there were surprises. Along with Torres, they have taken 3 other strikers for the Championship, Fernando Llorente, Pedro and Alvaro Negredo. All of them belong to a league of its won. It would be interesting to see as to how many of these strikers would play during a game.  What kind of formation would they try to explore? The most notable absentee from the squad has to be Roberto Soldado.

Spain, the defending champions are considered to be favourites for Euro 2012 title. They have some of the best players in the world, which put them in good stead for the championship. If football matches are won by scoring goals, then Spain should consider themselves lucky with world class strikers and midfielders in their squad.

Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez, Anders Iniesta, Juan Mata, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas are midfielders who could walk into any world class team. But, a maximum of only four players could play as midfielders for Spain in a single match. So, it could be a problem of plenty for Del Bosque, who plays an important role in coaching the team. They have a total of 9 midfielders in the team, which is one too many for one’s liking.

As a result of which, they have 7 defenders in their squad of 23 players. Four of them would be playing during a game. There are maximum chances of defenders getting injured during the tournament. Spain would be unfortunate if they are badly hit with injuries during the tournament, as they do not have more alternatives in the backline.

Bit, with such an attacking squad, Spain has a great chance to repeat their previous performance of Euro 2008, which was played at Austria and Switzerland. If they play like the way they did in 2010 World Cup and Euro 2008, no team can stop them from being crowned champions of Euro 2012.
