Liverpool deny Chelsea Champions League qualification through EPL route

May 9, 2012

Liverpool played out a good game against their rivals, Chelsea to make it impossible for the blues to qualify for the Champions league via EPL. They have to win the Champions League if they are to qualify for the competition next year. It was a huge revenge act by Liverpool, who lost the FA Cup finals to Chelsea.

Chelsea , Liverpool, Champions League , Fourth spot EPL

Had they won their match against Liverpool yesterday, the story would have been different. They would have come closer to the fourth spot in the standings table, but it was not to be as Liverpool thrashed Chelsea 4-1, at Anfield. Chelsea’s dreams have been shattered. It would have made the Liverpool fans happy, who have been denied of a good display by their players in their home ground.

A Chelsea victory could have made the final day of the EPL very interesting with two teams battling for the title and Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle having a good shout for Champions League presence next season. But the race now seems to be between Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle United, out of which only two would make it for the premier football club competition, if Chelsea lose the Champions league finals against Bayern Munich.

But, all is not over for Chelsea, as they would be eager than before to win the Champions League. It would not only bring the trophy to Stamford Bridge, but also grant them a place for Champions League football next season. If blues win the trophy, Chelsea would qualify for Champions league and the team that finishes in the fourth spot (in EPL) this season  will be automatically rejected for Champions League and would be sent to the Europa League.
